G: drive FAQ

The following information is specifically for the G Drive Migration

Please be aware that shortcuts to other locations with G drive or links in excel files will no longer work after the migration so it is recommended you delete your existing shortcuts and create new ones once you have been migrated


Q – Do I need to do anything before my Home Drive is migrated

A – General housekeeping is always useful, please have a look at these following tips


Q – Can I start using OneDrive now and not wait to be migrated

A – Yes you can please look here for Information on how to do this


Q – I have received a report telling me some of my files will not migrate, what do I do

A – Some characters have special meanings when used in file names in OneDrive. If a file or folder contains any of the characters listed below, it may prevent files and folders from being migrated. You will need to rename the file or folder to remove these characters before you are migrated. To rename a file or folder in Windows, right click on it and choose Rename from the menu. 

Invalid Characters:

” * : < > ? / \ |

~ (only invalid if it is at the beginning of the file or folder name)

In addition, the following names aren’t allowed for files or folders: AUX, PRN, NUL, CON, COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT0, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, LPT9.

Lastly, the entire path, including the file name, must contain fewer than 400 characters.


Q – I have a confidential file on my Home Drive what shall I do with it

A – OneDrive is a suitable location for information that is classified up to and including Confidential. For information Classification  - Please see DG09 - Information Classification

This is an opportunity to review the information you hold in your Home Drive (G: drive). If you do find  Confidential information on your Home Drive please create a separate folder called Confidential and place the Confidential information in that folder prior to migrating to OneDrive, this will then allow you to easily track and control the Confidential data you hold


Q – I have been migrated but can’t find a file

A – Please check in the folder Migrated_from_G_Drive, if you still have issues please contact the Service Desk and log a ticket

Q – Now my files are on OneDrive can I share them with a colleague

A – Yes you can please have a look at the following guide


Q – I have been migrated but my Quick Access points to files on my G: drive

A - Quick Access remembers files you have opened recently, its suggested that you clear Quick Access by going into File Explorer and Right Clicking on Quick Access and then the Clear History Button
