Eudora versions 5.1 to 7 - PC

Setting up Eudora to use secure connections is not straightforward and it first needs to be 'told' to trust the server security certificate manually.

  • Go to Tools > Options > Sending Mail
  • Check Allow authentication and If available STARTTLS from the Secure Sockets..menu:

Note that checking Use submission port (587) may be required if your ISP blocks the default submission port, 25. This is also the case if you are using the college's Halls or wireless networks.

  • Now try to send a message. The SSL negotiation will fail, but you can now go back to the 'Sending mail' window above and click on 'Last SSL Info'

  • Click on Certificate Information Manager, find and highlight the relevant certificate under Server Certificates (the one whose subject is 'smtp.qmul.ac.uk')

  • Click the Add to trusted button.
  • Restart Eudora before sending further mail - it is easily upset!

Eudora 5.1 - Mac

Eudora on the Mac uses a system utility called Keychain Access (MacOS 9 +) to store password information. If this was not set up when you installed Eudora you may have to set it up by choosing Keychain Access from the Control Panel under the Apple menu. The first time you send mail using SSL, Eudora needs to be 'told' to trust the server security certificate manually by adding it to the keychain.

  • Choose Settings from the Special menu
  • Go to Sending Mail
    • Make sure the SMTP server is set to smtp.qmul.ac.uk
    • Check Allow Authorisation:

  • Move down to the SSL section
    • Set SSL for SMTP to Optional(TLS) or Required(TLS)

  • Click OK to return to the Eudora screen.

At this point you need to send a test message to yourself then,

  • When you get the Error message:

  • Close the Task Progress window and click Open in the Unknown SSL Certificate' window:
  • Check Add to keychain and set When using the certificate to Always Trust

  • Click OK

The new certificate should appear in the Keychain window:

Close windows until you return to the Eudora screen. Try sending another message to yourself to confirm that the settings are working.

Note: You may find that the previous test message has been queued.
