Halls of Residence & Wireless Network Connections

Most Halls of Residence rooms are equipped with network connection points which allow you to connect your computer or laptop to the college network and the internet. Wi-fi access points distributed around the College sites and Halls of Residence also enable you to connect to the network if you have a laptop with a wireless network card.

Connecting to the college network in either way will allow you to access your email, Student Service filestore, College web sites such as the Library or departmental pages, WebCT Virtual Learning Environment and the Courses web server.

Please note that full and unrestricted internet access is not guaranteed on the Halls or Wireless networks.

You will be able to access resources off-campus, but for reasons of legality, security, feasibility or to give priorty to essential network traffic, the Halls and Wireless services are managed and controlled so you may not be able to do certain activities such as file-sharing, gaming or accessing some remote VPNs that you would on a full internet service from a commercial provider.

What you will need to make a connection...

  • Firstly, you will need an account to receive a username and password that can be used to gain access to the network:
    • if you are an undergraduate or taught postgraduate you will need an account on the College's Student Service PC network.
    • If you are a research postgraduate or member of staff, you will need an IT Services central username and password.
  • You will need a reasonably up-to-date computer with a network card. Some computers have these built in but for others, you may need to install a network card and set it up. NB: a modem port will not do.
  • If you are using Microsoft Windows you can use any version from Windows 95 onward.
  • For a Macintosh computer, you can be running Mac OS X 10.4 back to System 7.6.1. You can check which System is installed by clicking on the Apple Menu and selecting 'About This Mac...'.
  • You will need to install eduroam security certificates.
  • If you are a visitor to the college, you will need to have configured your laptop or other mobile device to use the eduroam network with your username from your home institution.
