Computing Facilities at QMUL
The College provides extensive computing facilities and support for staff and students, with PCs and Apple Macs being used throughout the College.
Student and Teaching Facilties
IT Services provides several open access computer rooms (some with extended opening times) for class teaching and individual use. These enable around 1300 students to use computers on campus during an average term-time afternoon. The Student PC network forms part of a Local Area Network linking the college to JANet (Joint Academic Network) and the internet, providing access to electronic mail, the World Wide Web and other information sources for all members of the College. The PC network also provides a wide range of software including standard word-processing, database and spreadsheet applications, program compilers and statistics and graphics packages.
Halls of Residence and Wireless Network Access
Network points are provided in Halls of Residence on all campuses, giving controlled, monitored access to the internet from most study bedrooms. There are also wi-fi access points at several locations around the campuses providing a similar internet service. See further details.
IT Services provides electronic infrastructure to support various college computing and communication requirements. These include email routing and mailboxes, websites, the staff directory, database services, mailing lists, web caching, DNS servers, news and an interactive UNIX facility.
Support and Training
A central Help Desk is open from 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. to provide advice on a wide range of problems including how to use the applications available and connecting laptops to the college network. In addition, the department runs short courses to help students and staff make better use of computers. Some courses are open to applicants from outside the college.
The facilities provided by IT Services are documented in several in-house publications available to users, such as the PC Primer and others available internally.
Register For An Account
Staff of the College may apply for a IT Services central staff account by downloading an application form and returning it to Liaison, Room W209, Queens Building, Mile End campus. Staff in administrative and service departments need to complete a Network Services Request form.
